The most expensive mistake I see coaches make with course platforms is buying one before they have a course to sell. It usually goes like this. A coach with eleven 1-to-1 clients and a waitlist signs up for Kajabi so she can “productise” someday. A year later she has paid $1,716, run every session live, and recorded nothing. The best course platform for coaches isn’t always a course platform, which is why this list has a pick on it that doesn’t host courses at all.
I’m not a coach. For six years, across more than 175 brands, my work has been on the product and pricing side of software, so I read these pages looking for where the real cost hides. For this ranking we pulled every vendor’s pricing page on 3 November 2026 and costed each pick the way you’d actually use it, including the email tool you’d need alongside it.
Thinkific Start is the best all-round course platform for most coaches selling a program
- Group program or self-paced course → Thinkific Start + Kit’s Free plan, $82/mo total
- First course on a tight budget → Teachable Builder at $69, or Starter at $29 while sales stay small
- Mostly 1-to-1 sessions → Paperbell, and skip the course platform for now
- You want course, email, site and community under one login → Kajabi Basic at $143, if you can carry the cost
Two kinds of coach, two different shopping lists
Every “best course platform” list I’ve read treats coaches like one group. We’re not going to. The right pick depends almost entirely on which of these sounds like you.
Coach A: the program seller
You run a group program, a cohort, or a self-paced course. You have, or want, an email list that buys from you. Most of your income comes from selling the same thing to many people. You need a strong course builder, a checkout with no percentage cut, and email that can run a launch.
Coach B: the 1-to-1 practice
Most of your income comes from coaching packages. Maybe six sessions over three months. You might share worksheets or recordings, but there’s no real “course”. You need booking, payment, a contract and a place for client notes. A course platform would solve a problem you don’t have yet.
Keep your letter in mind. Each pick below says which coach it fits.
The 6 best course platforms for coaches, ranked
1. Thinkific Start: the best course platform for coaches selling programs
- Best for: Coach A, running a group program, a cohort or a growing course library
- Price: $82/mo yearly · $109/mo monthly
- Platform fee: 0%
- Verdict: The deepest course builder here, with a community on the entry plan and no fee eating your launches.
Thinkific raised prices in October 2026. Then it retired its Basic plan in late October; the cheapest plan is now Start. That makes Thinkific pricier than it was, and no longer the cheap option. It still comes out on top for program sellers. You get unlimited courses and unlimited students. Quizzes, drip content and certificates are included, and so are communities, memberships and bundles. There’s no cut of your sales, so a $5,000 launch month costs you the same $82 as a quiet one. Grow ($164) and Expand ($374) sit above it, and most solo coaches won’t need them.

The catch is email. Thinkific’s built-in email is basic; most coaches pair it with Kit or MailerLite to run a launch sequence. Kit’s Free plan covers up to 10,000 subscribers with one automation and one sequence. That’s enough for a welcome series and a single sales sequence. Total: $82 a month.
When you outgrow Kit’s Free plan, Kit Creator at 1,000 subscribers is $33 a month yearly. That brings you to $115, $28 under Kajabi Basic, and you’re not capped at 5 products or 2,500 contacts.
Skip it if: you hate the idea of two logins, or price is the deciding factor for a single course. Teachable Builder does the core job for $13 a month less.
2. Paperbell: don’t buy a course platform yet
- Best for: Coach B, the 1-to-1 practice
- Price: $97/mo monthly · $970/yr · one plan, everything included
- Platform fee: none
- Verdict: Ranked second because, for a huge share of coaches, it’s the right first purchase instead of a course platform.
Back to the coach paying $1,716 a year for Kajabi. What she actually does every week is book sessions, take payment for packages, send a contract and keep notes. Kajabi can be bent to do some of that. It wasn’t built for it.
Paperbell was. It combines scheduling, payments, contracts (signed through Dropbox Sign) and a client portal in one tool built only for coaches. You can sell a six-session package, have the client sign and pay, and let them book all six sessions from one link. It supports group coaching too. And there are no platform transaction fees on top of card processing.
If she moved, her yearly software bill would fall from $1,716 to $970, and she could drop a separate booking app too. The course idea stays on her list. When it’s ready, she can add a course platform then.
Paperbell has no free plan. It’s one plan at $97 a month, or $970 a year, which works out to two months free. There’s a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can run a real client through the whole flow before you’re committed.

Skip it if: you’re selling a self-paced course to people you’ll never meet. Paperbell isn’t a course builder. Read our full Paperbell review for where it falls short.
3. Teachable Builder: the cheapest course host with no fee
- Best for: Coach A on a budget, with a first course and up to 10 products
- Price: $69/mo yearly · $89/mo monthly
- Platform fee: 0%
- Verdict: $13 a month cheaper than Thinkific Start, with a polished checkout. The 10-product cap is the catch.
Teachable dropped its free plan in 2026. Its entry plan, Starter, is $29 a month yearly but takes 7.5% of every sale. That fee overtakes the price gap to Builder at about $533 a month in sales. Above that, Starter is the more expensive plan. At $2,000 a month in sales, the Starter fee alone is $150.
So for any coach with real sales, Builder is the Teachable plan to compare. Next to Thinkific Start, both with 0% fees, Builder is $13 a month cheaper. It caps you at 10 products, where Thinkific has no limit. Students aren’t capped on any Teachable plan. Like Thinkific, you’d still add an email tool such as Kit.
Why not first? Thinkific Start puts communities and memberships on its entry plan, so check which Teachable plan covers what you need before you assume Builder does. And if you’ll make lots of small products, ten fills up fast. But for a single course or two, many coaches will prefer Teachable’s sales pages and checkout, and pay less for them.
Skip it if: you plan a big course library or a membership community. Our Teachable pricing breakdown shows exactly where Starter stops being cheap.
4. Kajabi Basic: the all-in-one, at a price
- Best for: Coach A with steady income who wants one login for everything
- Price: $143/mo yearly · $179/mo monthly
- Platform fee: 0% with Kajabi Payments
- Verdict: The most complete tool here, and the most expensive way to start.
Kajabi does more out of the box than anything else on this list. Courses, email marketing, a website, funnels and a community all come in Basic. There’s no Kajabi transaction fee when you use Kajabi Payments. Check the surcharge if you plan to connect your own Stripe account. If you value having one place for your whole business, nothing else matches it.
But Kajabi’s January 2026 pricing change retired the cheaper Kickstarter plan for new customers. Existing Kickstarter users keep their rate for now. For everyone else, $143 a month is the starting line. Basic also limits you to 5 products, 2,500 contacts and 1 website. Five products covers a course, a group program and a membership with room to spare. The contact cap is the one to watch. Past 2,500, you’re on Growth at $199 a month yearly.
Put it next to Thinkific Start plus Kit Creator, which comes to $115. The gap is $28 a month, or $336 a year. On monthly billing it’s $179 against $148, a $31 gap. That’s the price of convenience, it’s smaller than it used to be, and for some coaches it’s well worth paying. Just remember the caps that come with it.
Skip it if: you’re under a few thousand a month in revenue, or you’d use only the course part. Our Kajabi vs Thinkific post works through both scenarios.
5. Podia Shaker: simple and bundled, with no fee
- Best for: Coach A who wants simple over deep, with a modest list
- Price: $84/mo yearly ($1,008/yr)
- Platform fee: 0%
- Verdict: The friendliest all-in-one for a non-technical coach, with email included.
Podia’s pitch is simplicity. Courses, downloads, a basic website and email all live in one clean tool. Coaches who find Kajabi overwhelming often feel at home in Podia within an afternoon.
The plan to watch is the cheaper one. Podia Mover is $42 a month yearly, one of the cheapest course entries here, but it takes a 5% transaction fee and stops at 50 products. Above about $840 a month in sales, that fee costs more than Shaker’s extra $42. That’s why Shaker, at $84 with no fee and room for 150 products, is our ranked pick. Earthquaker removes the product limit for $150 a month.
Email is included on every plan, which is Podia’s real draw. Check the subscriber allowance on Podia’s page against your list before you count on it. If your list fits, Shaker at $84 beats Thinkific plus Kit Creator at $115.
Podia has no free plan, but its 14-day free trial doesn’t ask for a card. That’s an easy trial to start.
Skip it if: your list is larger than Podia’s email allowance, or you need advanced course features like detailed quizzes. See Podia vs Thinkific for the full trade-off.
6. Teachable Starter: the cheapest way in
- Best for: Coach A testing a first course, with very low sales expected
- Price: $29/mo yearly · $39/mo monthly
- Platform fee: 7.5%
- Verdict: The lowest price on this list, as long as sales stay under about $533 a month.
At $0 in sales, the 7.5% fee costs you nothing, and $29 is the cheapest paid course platform here. That makes Starter a fair home for a lead-magnet course or a bonus for 1-to-1 clients. It allows 5 products. Podia Mover, at $42 with email included and a 5% fee, is the other cheap way in.
It’s ranked last because the fee punishes success. At $1,000 a month in sales, Starter costs $104, more than Builder’s $69 and Thinkific Start’s $82. If you pick it, set a monthly reminder to check your sales against the $533 line.
Skip it if: you expect steady sales within a few months. Go straight to Builder.
Course platforms for coaches compared side by side
| Pick | Price (yearly) | Platform fee | Email included? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Thinkific Start | $82/mo | 0% | Simple built-in (add Kit, from $0) | Coach A, programs and community |
| 2. Paperbell | $970/yr ($97 monthly) | None | No (not a course platform) | Coach B |
| 3. Teachable Builder | $69/mo | 0% | No (add Kit) | Coach A on a budget |
| 4. Kajabi Basic | $143/mo | 0% (Kajabi Payments) | Yes, 2,500 contacts | Coach A, all-in-one |
| 5. Podia Shaker | $84/mo | 0% | Yes (check allowance) | Coach A, wants simple |
| 6. Teachable Starter | $29/mo | 7.5% | No (add Kit) | Coach A, testing |
What a year really costs with email included
Sticker prices mislead because some tools include email and some don’t. So here’s each Coach A setup with email added, at a list of about 1,000 subscribers. For tools without email, we’ve added Kit Creator at $33 a month.
Two things jump out. First, Teachable Builder plus Kit is the cheapest fee-free setup at $102. Starter looks cheaper at $62, but that’s before 7.5% of every sale. Second, Kajabi Basic is now only $28 a month more than Thinkific Start plus Kit, and it adds a website and funnels. The case for splitting tools is about caps and flexibility now, more than price.
Podia isn’t in the chart. Email comes with every plan, but we couldn’t re-verify how many subscribers each plan covers, so check Podia’s page. If your list fits Shaker, $84 with email included is the lowest fee-free total here.
For a coach happy on Kit’s Free plan, the picture tightens further. Teachable Builder is $69, Thinkific Start $82 and Podia Shaker $84. All are fine. Pick on how the tool feels to use and whether you need a community.
Don’t forget processing: every option above also pays about 2.9% + 30¢ per sale to Stripe or PayPal. It’s the same everywhere, so it doesn’t change the ranking. It does change your take-home, so budget for it.
Paying monthly while you test? Here’s what that costs
Most coaches don’t want to commit to a year on a tool they haven’t sold through yet. Fair. But monthly billing changes the gaps, sometimes a lot. Here’s each pick on monthly billing where the vendor publishes it.
| Pick | Monthly billing | Yearly billing (per month) | Extra you pay for flexibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thinkific Start | $109 | $82 | $27/mo |
| Paperbell | $97 | $970/yr | $194/yr |
| Teachable Builder | $89 | $69 | $20/mo |
| Teachable Starter | $39 | $29 | $10/mo |
| Kajabi Basic | $179 | $143 | $36/mo |
| Podia Shaker | Not listed here. Check Podia’s page for monthly billing before you buy. | ||
My rule of thumb: pay monthly for two or three months, then switch. Kajabi is the one where the monthly premium bites hardest. Three months on monthly billing costs you $108 more than three months on yearly. That’s a lot to pay for the right to leave.
How your sales level changes the ranking
The ranking above assumes a coach somewhere in the middle. Your own sales can move a pick up or down. Here’s how the order shifts at three sales levels, for Coach A.
At $0 a month: still building
You’re paying to set things up, and every dollar is a cost with no return yet. Teachable Starter at $29 is the cheapest option, and at $0 in sales the 7.5% fee costs you nothing. Podia Mover at $42 is next, with email included. Of the fee-free plans, Teachable Builder at $69 and Thinkific Start at $82 with Kit’s Free plan are the ones to compare. Kajabi at $143 makes the least sense here. You’d be spending $1,716 a year before your first sale.
At $1,000 a month: first steady sales
Fees start to matter. Teachable Starter’s 7.5% now costs $75 a month, which pushes it to $104 in total, above Builder’s $69. Podia Mover’s 5% fee costs $50, putting Mover at $92, more than Shaker’s $84 with no fee. Teachable Builder stays at $69 and Thinkific Start at $82. The fee-free plans all pull ahead.
At $5,000 a month: a working business
Here the ranking tightens. Percentage fees are now brutal. Teachable Starter would take $375 a month and Podia Mover $250, so both are out. Every fee-free option is affordable relative to revenue. At this point the right choice is less about price and more about time. If Kajabi’s single login saves you a few hours a month of fiddling with integrations, the $28 gap over Thinkific Start plus Kit Creator is easy to justify, as long as your list fits in Basic’s 2,500 contacts.
The pattern: at low sales, choose on price. At high sales, choose on time saved. In the middle, avoid any plan with a percentage fee.
Three common mistakes when choosing a course platform
Buying for the business you want, not the one you have
This is the mistake from the top of the page. It’s the most common one and the most expensive. Coaches buy the tool that fits the six-figure course business they imagine, then pay for it for a year while they keep running 1-to-1 sessions. Buy for the next six months. You can always move up.
Ignoring email until launch week
This one tends to surface in the week before a launch, the worst time to find it. The course is built and looks lovely, and then the coach notices Thinkific’s built-in email is too basic for a launch sequence. What follows is an evening of setting up Kit, importing a list and writing a sequence at speed. The launch usually survives; the sleep doesn’t. Whatever you pick, decide where your emails come from on day one. Our guide on email marketing for coaches can help.
Picking the cheapest entry plan with a fee
Teachable Starter and Podia Mover both look cheap. Both take a cut of every sale. If you expect real sales within a few months, the fee-free plan almost always works out cheaper over a year. Do the math before you click “start”.
Five questions to answer before you pick a course platform
Surveys from 2024 suggest around 60% of coaches have launched an online course. That’s a lot of coaches who’ve already been through this decision. The ones who got it right tend to answer these questions first.
Have three people asked to buy it?
Not “said it sounds great”. Asked to pay. If you can’t name three, you may not need a course platform this month. Pre-sell the program from a booking or payment page, run the first round live, and build the course from what you taught. Then you’ll know what to put in it.
Where will your email list live?
If the answer is “inside the course platform”, you’re choosing Kajabi or Podia. If it’s “in its own tool”, you’re free to pick any course host. Both are fine. Just decide on purpose, because moving a list later is a chore.
Do your students need to talk to each other?
A community changes which plan you need. On Thinkific it’s included on Start, the entry plan. On Kajabi it’s included. On Teachable and Podia, check the plan details before you assume. If the honest answer is “they’ll talk on our weekly call”, you don’t need one yet.
How many separate products will you sell?
Kajabi Basic caps you at 5 products. That covers a course, a group program, a mini-course and a paid workshop, with one to spare. Teachable Builder stops at 10, Podia Mover at 50 and Shaker at 150. Thinkific offers unlimited courses on every plan. Count your products for the next year, not just today. While you’re at it, count your list too. Kajabi Basic’s email covers 2,500 contacts.
What’s your expected monthly sales, honestly?
This decides whether a percentage fee is harmless or expensive. If you can’t guess, assume more than you think. Coaches tend to underestimate launch months, and launch months are when a 5% or 7.5% fee does the most damage.
Lock-in: how hard is each one to leave?
Nobody plans to switch platforms, but plenty of coaches do. Price changes like Kajabi’s in January 2026, and Thinkific’s October 2026 rise and retirement of Basic, push people to move. So it’s worth knowing what leaving costs before you arrive.
- Thinkific and Teachable: you’re mainly moving courses and students. Your email list lives in Kit, so it doesn’t move. Medium effort.
- Kajabi: you’d move courses, email list, automations, website, funnels and community at once. This is the hardest to leave, and the price of having everything in one place.
- Podia: similar to Kajabi but smaller, since the website and email are simpler. Medium to high effort.
- Paperbell: you’d move client records, packages and contracts. Fairly light, because there’s no course content to rebuild.
Splitting course hosting and email across two tools is more work up front. It’s also the cheapest insurance against a future price rise. If one vendor gets expensive, you replace one piece, not your whole business.
How I ranked these course platforms
I ranked on four things, in this order:
- True monthly cost for a coach, including the email tool you’d need and any transaction fee at realistic sales.
- Fit for the coach’s actual work. A tool that’s great at courses ranks lower for a coach who doesn’t sell courses.
- How well it scales. Does the cost jump sharply as your list or sales grow? Podia Mover’s 5% fee, Teachable Starter’s 7.5% fee and Teachable’s product caps all count against them here.
- Lock-in. How hard is it to leave? All-in-one tools score worse because you’d be moving everything at once.
What I didn’t do: I didn’t run a hands-on trial of each platform for this piece. This is analysis of each vendor’s pricing page and plan limits, checked on 3 November 2026, plus years of watching how SaaS products get priced, bought and outgrown. We re-check prices monthly. If a vendor changes a plan, the date at the top changes too.
I also left the higher plans out of the ranking. Kajabi Growth ($199 a month yearly), Teachable Growth ($139), Thinkific Grow ($164) and Podia Earthquaker ($150) are built for bigger businesses than most solo coaches run.
Where the lower-ranked picks beat the winner
A ranked list can hide that every tool here wins somewhere. Here’s where Thinkific Start, our top pick, loses.
- 0% platform fee on every plan
- Unlimited courses and students
- Quizzes, drip, certificates and communities on the entry plan
- Pairs with a free email plan up to 10,000 subscribers
- Teachable Builder: $13 a month cheaper with 0% fees, and a polished checkout
- Teachable Starter: the lowest price while sales stay small
- Kajabi: email, website, funnels and community in one login
- Podia: simplest setup, email built in, 14-day trial with no card
- Paperbell: packages, contracts and booking for 1-to-1 work
Who shouldn’t buy any course platform on this list
Some coaches will read this whole ranking and the honest answer is “none of the above, for now”. That’s you if:
- You have fewer than a handful of paying clients. Your time is better spent getting clients than building a course. A free booking page and a payment link will carry you.
- Your “course” is really a set of PDFs. You can send worksheets by email or share a folder. Paying $29 to $143 a month to host five PDFs is a poor trade.
- You sell only live group calls. If there’s no recorded content, a scheduling tool with group sessions, or Paperbell’s group coaching, may be all you need.
- You’re still changing your niche. A course locks in a topic. If you’re testing who you coach, wait until it settles.
None of this means a course platform is a bad idea. It means the timing matters more than the tool. Picking the “best” platform six months too early is still a mistake.
What I’d do in your shoes
If you’re Coach B, try Paperbell with your next new client, inside its 30-day money-back window. If the flow works, switch to the $970 yearly plan. Revisit course platforms only when you have a course outline and at least a few people asking for it. Our best CRM for coaches list has other options if Paperbell isn’t the right shape.
If you’re Coach A with a small list, start Thinkific Start on monthly billing at $109 and pair it with Kit’s Free plan. Once your first launch works, switch to yearly and save $27 a month. If $82 is a stretch and one course is the plan, Teachable Builder at $69 is the cheaper fee-free start.
If you’re Coach A doing well, and the idea of stitching tools together makes you tired, Kajabi Basic is a fair choice. Just make sure you’d use the email, website and community. Otherwise you’re paying $28 to $61 a month more than Thinkific Start plus Kit for features you don’t touch. And check your list size. Past 2,500 contacts, the Kajabi plan you need is Growth at $199.
Not sure which coach you are? Our two-minute quiz asks five questions and suggests a setup.
Questions about course platforms for coaches
What is the best course platform for coaches in 2026?
For most coaches selling a course or group program, Thinkific Start at $82 a month (yearly) is the best all-round pick. It has no transaction fee, unlimited courses and a community included. Pair it with Kit’s Free email plan. On a tight budget, Teachable Builder at $69 is the cheapest fee-free option. If you want everything in one tool, Kajabi Basic at $143 is the strongest all-in-one.
Do life coaches need a course platform?
Many don’t, at least not at first. If most of your income comes from 1-to-1 packages, a coaching tool like Paperbell handles booking, payment, contracts and client notes. Add a course platform when you have a real course to sell.
Which course platform has no transaction fees?
Thinkific (all plans), Kajabi Basic (with Kajabi Payments), Teachable Builder and Podia Shaker and Earthquaker all charge 0% platform fees. Teachable Starter takes 7.5% and Podia Mover takes 5%. Card processing of about 2.9% + 30¢ still applies everywhere.
Is Kajabi worth it for a new coach?
Usually not. Kajabi Basic costs $143 a month on yearly billing, and the cheaper Kickstarter plan was retired for new customers in January 2026. A new coach can get a similar course setup with Thinkific Start and a free email tool for $82 a month, or Teachable Builder for $69.
Is there a free course platform for coaches?
Not among the main options anymore. Thinkific, Teachable and Podia have all dropped free plans. Podia offers a 14-day free trial with no card. Paperbell has no free plan either; it offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, and it’s a coaching tool rather than a course builder.
Can I host a group coaching program on a course platform?
Yes. Thinkific Start includes communities and memberships, Kajabi includes a community in Basic, and Podia bundles a simple setup. If your group program is mostly live calls with a few resources, Paperbell also supports group coaching.
